PPR 101 CONFERENCE RECAP!
This past weekend I attended the PPR 101 Conference in Berkeley Ca. The conference was created by Chiq Simms the “Goddess of PR” and Louis Anthony of Divadend Entertainment (http://divadendentertainment.com/).
The PPR 101 Conference is social networking to inform and motivate local artist, management, labels etc. on the most effective ways to receive maximum exposure and visibility in the media. The conference consisted of panel discussions and an artist showcase, which select individuals were chosen to go on to perform on BET, 106 and Park.
Attendees had the opportunity to network & inter act with some of the top entertainment journalists, editors, critics, publicists, marketers and television show hosts in the game.
Now, I’ll be first to admit… When I first heard about the conference coming to town, I was a little apprehensive of the whole format. Because we’ve seen so many similar events before that didn’t produce any results. But, I did my research and read the testimonials of the event in other cities and I was convinced it was worth checking out for myself. And I’m glad I did. Because Chiq Simms delivered on everything outlined in the event. I met some of the coolest Tastemakers in the game, networked with other prominent individuals in our local artisan community, and got to reconnect with other industry professionals and artists who I already know, but never get the chance to sit down with face to face & see what type of synergy we can make together.
The topics that were touched on in the panel discussions are:
What is public relations?
What are a publicist’s duties?
How to hire a publicist?
What to expect from a good publicist?
Learn what makes an artist newsworthy?
How to do you approach editors?
Reinventing and diversifying yourself and your brand
WHAT'S BEEF? ARE YOU INDUSTRY OR IN THE STREETS.
All the following topics were informative. I now have a better understanding of the Public Relations R&R and how vital it is to an artist upward mobility..
We also got to touch on a more personal and definitely touchy subject… Bay Area Music Politics.
Originally had planned on detailing this heated debate, how it escalated in the conference, who said what, and all that good drama you would love to hear about… But I don’t think it’s necessary to go into it, if you work in the local music industry, then its nothing you haven’t heard before. And I don’t want that drama to over cloud the main purpose of the event. Bottom line: You should’ve been there like the other tastemakers were to witness what went down.
But for the record: Big Rich’s comment that sparked the fire in the debate about Bay Area Music & media was misinterpreted. But, Mistah FAB re-iterated on the subject and eventually cleared up the matter.
What I will say on the issue is… We (The Bay) need to get out the box… remove the box… Stop blaming certain individuals in the local industry for the un-success of your career! At the end of the day your career is what you make of it. If you’re not receiving the support you feel you are deserving of from local media, radio etc. Then you need to get out there, make the moves you need to make for yourself and Expand your Market! Read a book or two on new techniques to maximizing your marketing potential in your market. There are plenty of successful artists in the industry who do not have singles rotating on the radio… but are making $$$, have a solid fan base and selling out shows.
Along those lines, I also think we need to have more industry dialogues/discussions like the ones we had on Saturday… The Lyricist Lounge Mixers was built on this format. We need some kind of platform once a month or quarter, where our local industry leaders, movers and shakers come together to discuss the issues that be. Maybe if we were able to air it out every once and while we wouldn’t have so much built up frustration, that escalates into the type of scene that went down on Saturday, which defeated the point.
The artists showcase…
I was more than impressed by the really good talent whom performed. And I was definitely unimpressed by the ones who weren’t talented. No need in mentioning the whack artists names… The ones who got it will be seen on 106 and Park very soon! Haha.
However, the showcase brings me to my next point… Etiquette: Something more than a few people were lacking in the conference. A “certain rapper” whose name shall remain anonymous, definitely needs to take an Etiquette 101 class! This I need to talk about!
So the story goes like this… A particular rapper had the opportunity to perform in front of the panelists and attendees. At the end of the showcase, the panelists then gave all the artists professional – constructive criticism on their performance, image, music etc. All the other artists LISTENED to the feedback of the judges, even if they disagreed with the comment’s, they were still respectable and took it like pro’s…. But OH NO!!!! This one particular rapper (not artist – just a rapper) couldn’t except that he wasn’t “the best thing since slice bread”… So he had to be the one to get ignorant and say some beligerant and so unprofessional things to the panelists.
In my opinion, he proved he is obviously too sensitive for this music industry. If you cant take criticism from professionals who have been in this game long enough to know who’s got it and who don’t… you need to re-evaluate your rap career. That blow up may have just cost him what little bit of 15 minutes he may have had one day… Not only did he blow up in front of members of the media; local industry cats seen it too. Not a good look! Even if, by some Miracle he steps his music game up and makes some tight music one day (probably not) his rep will always have that red mark on it…. Ok, I’m over him. Lets Move on!
Some of my favorite quotes of the day…
“There’s too many rappers out here and not enough fans” ---Big Rich
“These artists are so into themselves, they act like they can’t be fans of other artist’s music” --- Mistah FAB
"Hip Hop artists need to take a self esteem course". --- Chiq Simms
“Peers shouldn't be running your co... A manager is supposed to MANAGE your career!” --- Chiq Simms
“You got 3 Minutes to get noticed or get black balled” --- Chiq Simms
“Promoting your label is just as important as promoting your artists.” --- Chiq Simms
Summary:
Overall the PPR 101 Conference was both fun and productive. Chiq Simms is the Truth. She speaks the Brutally Honest Truth to be exact! And she produces results! She’s is the definition of a Tastemaker.
It was unfortunate that more artists/labels/management from the Bay Area didn’t take advantage of this conference, but the most influential voices of our artisan community were there to represent us and they can vouch for the results of the PPR 101 Conference outcome.
Mistah FAB is an excellent public speaker (& comedian lol). He definitely represented for the SF Bay Area in the highest regards. Big Rich is also a very intelligent and insightful person, his presence and insight was also essential to the success that resulted from the conference. We need to see you all on more dialogues like this!
To the Artists and Tastemakers who did attend – Erk Tha Jerk, Portia of Midnight PR, Netta B., PK of GMM, Dr. Post A lot, Queen B Chronicles, Carl Vincin, DJ Maniakal, Danielle Banks… Even Jacka, JC of M1Promo, Cellski showed up later in the evening… Umm I know I’m missing some names. But, to all the Tastemakers who took the time out their day to come through, it was a pleasure seeing you!
The artists you need to be worried about this year… Erk Tha Jerk, Big Rich, Jacka and NIO Tha Gift… Their names were mentioned at the conference and they are definitely being recognized… so you should pay attention too! The Bay is getting ready to be a Problem! Hahaha!
To the Chiq, Louis and all the panelists … Thank you for gracing the Bay Area with your presence and knowledge. We look forward to your return next year!

LEFT COAST LIVE RECAP!
Friday May 15th I had the honor of hosting the 1st Annual Left Coast Live Festival in Downtown San Jose. Blessing the Socially Flyy stage was the Bay Area’s own, Martin Luther and Kev Choice Ensemble.
The festival was a great success and the show’s were absolutely amazing, to say the least. The synergy was overflowing (so were the drinks) & the crowd’s response to the music was abso-freakin-lutely crazy! I met some of the most eclectic urban music lovers I’ve seen in my life, all come together in support of the Left Coast.
This was my first show of the summer and boy what motivation it was! It was definitely a re assurance, to me, as to why I love music and being in the music business. And most importantly, why the game needs me! Haha. I am looking forward to seeing what the Bay Area music brings about by the end of this year!
Martin Luther and Kev Choice are the truth! There can never be another Kev or Martin in this world, so make their music apart of yours and it will be a much happier world to live in! LOL. Luv U both!
Much Appreciation to the organizers of the LCL and Tommy Aguilar of Ungrammer, for putting me on. I love the South Bay’s unified forefront we have built in support of the local artists and music community. 2010 is gonna be… well you just wait and see. :o)

Kanye Helping Pay For Esthero Album
The name Esthero, pronounced [ɛsˈtɛroʊ] es-TAIR-oh…
Esthero's sound characteristically features her voice over a mix of mellow bass lines, jazzy trumpets, Spanish guitar and hip-hop. She is sometimes compared to artists Björk, Portishead and Sade. Later artists who count Esthero among their influences include Res, Fergie and fellow Canadian Nelly Furtado.
After riding high and rolling in royalties by co-writing the hit "Love Lockdown" and "RoboCop" for Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak and the title track of Brandy's Human last year, Esthero is working on a new record of her own. Read Full Article

Keisha Chante: Set To Play Aaliyah In An Upcoming Biopic
It has been reported that Warner Brother Films will be creating the motion picture of the late singer and actress Aaliyah who died in a plane crash in 2001. Aaliyah sold more than 32 million albums worldwide before her career was cut short. The film will be a biopic of the singers life. Bill Condon, director of “DreamGirls” will be directing the film.
A source for the film reveals that they “will be going very deep into Aaliyah’s life” and will allow fans to see the “most intimate side of Aaliyah’s legacy.” Sources say the script for the film ‘holds no bars’ and will go as far as touching on the subject of Aaliyah’s highly debated and publicized marriage and annulment to producer R.Kelly. --- (Read Full Article)

Thought of the Day: LOVE IS GOOD MEDICINE
“Love and intimacy are at a root of what makes us sick and what makes us well, what causes sadness and what brings happiness, what makes us suffer and what leads to healing. If a new drug had the same impact, virtually every doctor in the country would be recommending it for their patients. It would be malpractice not to prescribe it.” -- Dr. Dean Ornish

Book of the Month: Making a Living in Your Local Music Market
Making a Living in Your Local Music Market, shows you how to expand and develop your skills as a musician and a composer, right in your own backyard. It explores topics relevant to musicians of every level. There is detailed coverage and success stories of regional music markets, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Austin, Atlanta, Denver, Miami, Seattle, and Portland, Oregon etc.
I am a book worm, I read all types of books... And this month I am reading this book. I am giving my review prior to finishing because I’ve already found so much lucrative information in this book that I had to share. This is a good book for artists, artist management and any music professionals to read. Contrary to the belief of most local artists, it is possible to survive happily in your local music market. There are a lot of good resources, right here in the Bay Area, who offer support to aspiring artists & musicians, from legal to grants for your entertainment companies… You just need to know where to look and most importantly --learn how to develop and package your artistic skills in your marketplace. Then and only then, will you gain enough momentum and exposure, to be successful in bigger markets like LA or NYC. This book is a good guide in helping you accomplish that.
So, Read the book. Educate yourself. If you do and still haven’t “realized your marketing potential” then ... umm ... maybe it’s more of a personal issue, then geography limiting your upward mobility. No offense.
Available at your local book stores … Or check your local library.
Remember Presidents, “A Mind is a terrible thing to waste”.

Forget Netflix… It’s Redbox on mines!
Have you been passing this big red machine in your local grocery stores lately thinking “hmmm... naw”? Let me put you on to game. $1 a movie! Need I say more?
I get the Netflix convenience of ordering from home, but I say, unless you’re too blind, cripple or crazy to leave the house… $1 compared to $8.99 is a better deal (depending on how many movies you watch a month). They have new & old releases just like Netflix or your local video store. And, with the $$ you save, now you can slide through Mc Dowell’s drive thru, pick up a few items off the $1 menu, call over some friends and have a great (low budget) movie party! Another good thing about Redbox is you can return the movies to any Redbox location. So say you got the movie over here… but you’re waaaaayyyy over there; no worries, just slide in to your nearest Redbox location, hit the “Return DVD” button … Poof! Magic! You’re done!
Yes, this was random… But hey, it’s a recession, every little bit helps! Lol.

Dir. Kevin Epps US 2008
The Black Rock chronicles the role of African-Americans at Alcatraz, the first super-maximum security prison, and examines the lives of a few African-American prisoners who were important figures in the history of "The Rock" from the 1930s to the 1960s. The film highlights the truth about the perseverance, sufferings, and resilience of the African-Americans who experienced Alcatraz during this time of racial prejudice and discrimination. Interviews with historians, archival footage, photographs and re-enactments are used to present an entirely new perspective on the most feared prison of its time. Wendy and Lucy' is eerily timely
Mick LaSalle, Chronicle Movie Critic
Movies have a funny way sometimes of knowing the future. The latest example is "Wendy and Lucy," which tells the story of a struggling young woman trying to make it to Alaska, so she can reach her idea of employment nirvana: a job in a fish-canning factory. This tale of poverty American-style was conceived and filmed when the Dow Jones was up around 11,000 and when the idea of going broke was, for most people, an abstract concept.
Going broke. Being poor. Getting down to your last buck. "Wendy and Lucy" may focus on one person, but its ambition is to make a larger point about what it's like to lose everything. Lack of means might be the easiest part. There's also the isolating loneliness of poverty, as well as the danger of it. There's that way poverty has of perverting relationships, inspiring disdain and eating into self-esteem. "Wendy and Lucy" shows all this and, with an uncanny prescience, presents it at precisely the moment when audiences are capable of receiving it, not with distance, but with empathy. And some real fear.Click here to read more
Director: Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy)
Cast: Michelle Williams, Will Patton, Larry Fessenden and Will Oldham

Oscar Shorts, Low-Hype and Sweet
By A. O. SCOTT
With the Academy Awards a little more than two weeks away, it’s just possible that your breathless anticipation may be edged with fatigue. Since the beginning of the year, a small number of Very Important, Very Worthy films have vacuumed up all the oxygen in the movie universe. You may find yourself in need of a break from the manufactured hysteria surrounding The Curious Reader of Slumdog Milk/Nixon.
A perfect antidote to this white-elephant parade can be found, paradoxically enough, in the program of Oscar-nominated short films that opens on Friday in a few dozen theaters nationwide. It may seem odd to propose one batch of Oscar bait as the answer to another, but the 10 contending short films — five animated, five live-action — exhibit some virtues that their feature-length counterparts lack. A.I. says Bye Bye to Cornrows!
In this clip A.I. showed up to the EAST's practice without his signature cornrows....watch how the players react.
Damn, after 13 years of rockin the signature cornrow braids, A.I. has cut it all off! This is gonna take some getting used to for me. Not that he doesn’t clean up well, but I am partial to his look in the braids… maybe it’s just the “thug passion” that made me love it more Lol… So Im curious, is Mama Iverson gonna get rid of her cornrows too?

All good, great news is never old news. Sending my “Congrats to the Hardest – Sexiest – couple in the Hip-Hop Industry”… “Sex, Thugs and Rock & Roll” It’s all you really need! Lol.

Snapple Music Fact:
This is not a Jackson 5 song… In case you were sadly mistaken. I had a debate with someone on the issue recently and of course I was right because I know my * ish!
The aforementioned song “Misdemeanor” was originally recorded by The Foster Sylvers, 1973. The Sylvers were a popular R&B/soul and disco family group in the 1970s from Memphis, Tennessee. Rapper, D.O.C. sampled this song on his 1989 hit, “Its Funky Enough”. (Do you know who produced this remake?)
Just a little Soul Classic 101 for you all… If you know who the Foster Sylvers aka The Sylvers are then you’ve already got an A on this assignment. Class dismissed!
P.S. Listen to their other hits, “Fools Paradise” & “Cry of a Dreamer”. Those would be some good samples to use, for producers tired of hearing and remixing the same old ones. **Just a thought** :o)
Public Enemy's thought on NY Post "Partial" apology
“The meaning of all of that, Some media is the whack
You believe its true, it blows me through the roof
Suckers, liars get me a shovel,
Some writers I know are damn devils
For them I say DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE!”

Spring/Summer 09: Colour Forecast
Every year Pantone, a company that makes color-related products for graphic designers, publishers, and other design-y people, forecasts each season’s color trends by talking to fashion designers about their collections. Here are some of the colors you can expect to see this Spring/Summer 09 season.
Below are some of my season inspired choices...
Spring/Summer 09: Flyy Season Picks
Flyy Kicks: Supra Must Have's
Man, recession or not Im gonna stay Flyy! Lol. I definitely have a shoe problem but I’ve learned to except what is … Which is why these are coming home with me in a few days. I originally had planned on buying the blue Skytop’s. Then I came across the yellow Vaiders & Im stuck! Unfortunately I don’t have it like that, right now, to buy both… I don’t know which ones to choose from. The Blue were my first love, but I’ve never had a pair of yellow sneakers. What do you think? Should I stick to my 1st choice? Or take a chance on the yellow? Either way Im gonna be flyy in which ever ones I choice… please believe it!
Flyy Fashion: Imaginary Foundation
Infinite: The power of the imagination makes us infinite.
Live out of your imagination: Nothing we can do can change the past, but everything we do changes the future.
No Limits: It is our duty as men and women to proceed as though the limits of our abilities do not exist.
Create Beauty: The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
Bolt of Inspiration: Charged by Imagination
Now that Im older I can't just walk around with big logos or meaningless taglines on my clothing because #1. Im not getting paid to be a walking billboard #2. My chess already draws enough attention, so if I am going to display anything in that area, there has to be a good reason to look. Lol.
I like the philosophy of the Imaginary Foundation line; "ecology" of being. Imagination, intuition, inspiration are basic to psyche. . . The aesthetics of the art work and the message each piece conveys, reveals my personal fashion statement.
These were a few of my personal Flyy Fav’s for tee's and the meaning of each one. You can find your own personal inspiration in fashion

CITY OF GOD'S SON: HIP-HOP OPERA
I’ve been on this for a minute now …A few weeks back I was at a friends house and they told me about this … I watched the trailer and downloaded the music project from the site and was instantly hooked. Not only because it features my favorite artists and songs but the aesthetics, creator Kenzo Digital, is bringing in this project is just phenomenal. I cant wait to see the Art Installation. Check it out for yourself:
“City of God’s Son” is an experimental hip-hop opera starring Nas, Jay Z, Ghostface, Biggie Smalls, Raekwon, Samuel Jackson, Delroy Lindo, and Laurence Fishburne. It is a crime drama/coming of age tale of three fictitious characters growing up in a crime ridden mythical city in a jungle. This project explores the icon of the gangster in modern media, and weaves musical history and gangster film history into an operatic music based story of brotherhood and survival. An homage to 90’s New York hip-hop, “City of God’s Son” is the redefinition of the remix. Featuring legendary soul singer Joe Bataan. A sound film/hip hop opera by Kenzo Digital. COMING THIS SUMMER: City of God’s Son art installation: This summer I will be creating a new form of Cinema, Theater, and Opera in an outside gallery space in NY's Chelsea art district. There, the listener will be able to experience COGS in the form it was initially intended, as a psychedelic abstract combination of visual and audio sensory over stimulation and deprivation in a unique outdoor setting. The installation is not a literal interpretation of the narrative, but rather a space that will help drive the listeners own visualization of the story through a mix of color, live action movement and gesture, sound, and space.

I met her back in 06 when she performed in San Jose, I knew then that she was headed for the top. Im a big supporter of her musical career, so I have to put her at the top of my Tastemaker list.
Jimmie Reign recently released her new single “Different Person” off the highly anticipated album “Pretty Girl” dropping soon. The song is Fresh-2-Def and the album will be too.

By far, my favorite MC of the year. This D.C. Tastemaker is not only a tight lyricist, he’s also a film director and got his own clothing line Bonney Runway. Kisses unleash chemicals that ease stress levels
I found this article interesting... I've always been told my kisses were like Kryptonite. Now I know why! lol
CHICAGO – "Chemistry look what you've done to me," Donna Summer crooned in Science of Love, and so, it seems, she was right. Just in time for Valentine's Day, a panel of scientists examined the mystery of what happens when hearts throb and lips lock. Kissing, it turns out, unleashes chemicals that ease stress hormones in both sexes and encourage bonding in men, though not so much in women.
Chemicals in the saliva may be a way to assess a mate, Wendy Hill, dean of the faculty and a professor of neuroscience at Lafayette College, told a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on Friday.
Fisher noted that more than 90 percent of human societies practice kissing, which she believes has three components — the sex drive, romantic love and attachment.
The sex drive pushes individuals to assess a variety of partners, then romantic love causes them to focus on an individual, she said. Attachment then allows them to tolerate this person long enough to raise a child.
Men tend to think of kissing as a prelude to copulation, Fisher said. She noted that men prefer "sloppy" kisses, in which chemicals including testosterone can be passed on to the women in saliva. Testosterone increases the sex drive in both males and females.
"When you kiss an enormous part of your brain becomes active," she added. Romantic love can last a long time, "if you kiss the right person."
